Let's see, um... the City Barn has 45+ horses, big paddocks and several huge pastures. The activity is non-stop - accomplished riders taking lessons honing their skills for the big show, Eventers tuning up for Opening day and oh, the kids... lessoning on the cutest ponies evah. Again, 45+ horses, endless streams of horses and riders...
Poor Sugar, not a lover in the bunch!
Being single myself, you would think I would feel some sympathy or at least, some compassion for her longing. As beautiful as she is, she has never experienced the touch of a lover. And what must it be like for her, to hear her biology ticking surrounded by so many "men". I do not yield to Ms Sugar, for she does not suffer in silence - no she does not!
Spring is in the air and the HEAT is high...
And we begin, the dance of the Spring Hussy. No ride is without its high stepping, body twisting, big spooking antics. Hers is a body filled with power and high tension that only a mother could love... It is immensely beautiful! And, yes... equally as dangerous!
I can see my ad for Sugar now:
Feeling like a rock star! Used with permission (www.connecticutphoto.com) |
- 16.3+H Bay and White Pinto Mare... MARE-ISH! (Caps intended!). Will dance you out of the tack in a huge spook, drop, prop and spin. Canter is the naughty gait and can reach some serious "airs above ground"! Is wicked agreeable (kind of) three seasons of the year... Watch out for Spring!
Yeah... that would be my ad. And, after a Spring rides or one of my dressage tests, I fantasize down to choosing the font in that ad.
But, you know... when you get through the Spring Hijinx, and forget the warm-ups from hell, there is something kind of special about a hormonal mare... nothing quite like them...
'Cause after a ride like that, ending with a powerful canter, light on her forehand and gentle in my own hands... I think... she makes me feel like a rock star...
And that is pretty ok!

Giddyup girl! I gotta say, I love the fact that my Sugar is not mare-ish at all. There's maybe one week in Spring that she gets a bit pissy about my spurs, but other than that, bupkus. And yes, i get down on my knees and thank the equine gods for this blessing daily.
I absolutely LOVE that first picture of her!! What a doll baby! Oh and I knew there was a reason I prefer geldings! :)
I've always liked mares. I used to have all mares and now have one mare and two geldings. I've had good luck with my very marish mare using pure raspberry leaves - have used both Mare Magic and MareBerry with good results. It seems to make the heat cycles less intense.
My 25 year old mare has not gone into heat yet this year...but it's coming. We have a new gelding coming in May and all hell will break loose, because our old girl thinks she's Madonna. And it lasts a month. I'm already stocking up on Mare Magic and planning a battle strategy to best handle her hormones, and the wake of confused/ hormone-addled geldings (who, yes, become possessive and snarky) in her wake!
Cougars have nothing on our Topaz...
My gelding is the one boy in the herd. "His" three mares torment him in the spring, competing with each other for his (puzzled and slightly bemused) attention. I think he's looking forward to when the heat cycle ends!
Ha, I love your add tho Pippi goes into heat year around and not just heat but full blown heat. It is so much fun.......not! Good luck with that till summer.
I swear my mare prefers two of the geldings where I board, over all the other 'guys'. She gets very animated when she is near them - of course, they are the two largest geldings at our barn!
All of the mares on our farm are acting like street walkers right now, I empathize!
You all make me smile! Who knew that I was not alone... And, actually I love mares. Attitude rocks...
Love the image of Melissa's mares acting like street walkers. And poor Freedom, all that lovin and no ability to return the favor.
And for those of you with Mares that are not mareish like the "Sainted Mare"... you are truly a lucky bunch!
What's REALLY fun is when your mare goes without cycling for the entire summer due to the heat, and then it returns all at once...
We skipped the Hussy Stage of the cycle and went straight to the Kill Everyone Stage. Screaming, squealing, and attempted murder.
Ironically, she was amazing schooling cross country that day.
